Possibly of Chinese origin.
Travelers carried them to Arabic countries and into Africa. It was brought to
North America by the slave trade into the Southeastern United States where it is
still a large part of Southern cooking. Also used in African and Indian dishes.
Legend has it, when you eat black-eyed peas on New Year's Day, it brings luck in
the new year. |
