Natural Grain Hot Cereal
Recipe from the collection of
Valerie
Phipps
So
delicious and a great way to start the day!
1 cup of
Phipps Nine Grain
Cereal or
Phipps Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats
1 tsp. Salt (optional)
4 cups water or milk
Bring
the water and salt to a boil over medium heat.
Slowly add the cereal, stirring constantly with a
whisk Turn the heat down to a simmer and let the
cereal cook for 10-15 minutes. (Natural grains take
longer to cook than “instant” or “quick-cooking”
cereals.) If your cereal gets too thick, thin it a
bit with a little water or milk. You want it to cook
long enough that the flavors develop and the grains
soften. Then cover the pot and turn off the heat.
Let it sit for a few minutes. Serve with milk or
cream, a pat of butter, if desired and sweeten with
honey, brown sugar, raw sugar, pure maple syrup or
Stevia to taste.
Great
idea! Add chopped walnuts and/or dried fruit such as
raisins or dried cranberries near the end of the
cooking time for added taste, texture and nutrition.
Serve
with home-made bread toasted and sweetened with a
spoonful of Phipps Country Strawberry Jam! Yum!
Serves
4.
